Other forms: forever chemicals

Forever chemicals are polluting substances that never break down. Used in products from nonstick cookware to raincoats to food packaging, forever chemicals are present in most people's bodies.

Scientists have only recently learned that forever chemicals, also known as PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are found nearly everywhere, including in our drinking water. These synthetic chemicals are useful, which is why they've become so widespread — they make shoes waterproof, keep pizza boxes from getting greasy, and stop eggs from sticking to the pan. They can also be toxic to humans, and it takes thousands of years for them to break down in the environment.
